At the direction of Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) has successfully seized a sanctioned Venezuelan oil tanker as part of Operation Southern Spear, a campaign focused on enforcing sanctions, countering narco-trafficking, and disrupting illicit financial networks.
Infrared video footage of the operation shows U.S. special forces fast-roping from a helicopter onto the vessel in international waters, demonstrating precision and coordination under complex maritime conditions. The seizure aligns with prior Southern Spear operations, which since November 2025 have neutralized 107 suspects and destroyed 31 vessels involved in criminal and terrorist-linked activity.
According to SOUTHCOM, the operation was conducted in close coordination with the Department of Homeland Security and the Justice Department, showcasing the U.S. military’s capability to support multi-agency missions at sea. Officials emphasized that these missions are authorized under international law and sanctioned to prevent the evasion of U.S. and allied financial and trade restrictions.
Operation Southern Spear reflects the Trump Administration’s broader strategy to treat narco-trafficking and sanctions evasion as national security threats. By combining intelligence-driven targeting with rapid maritime intervention, SOUTHCOM aims to disrupt networks responsible for the flow of illicit narcotics and sanctioned commodities, including oil, toward markets that fuel organized crime and terrorist operations.
The latest successful seizure reinforces the effectiveness of specialized maritime capabilities in enforcing U.S. sanctions and demonstrates a continued commitment to securing international waters against threats that jeopardize regional stability and national security.
