A dramatic rescue unfolded off the coast of Wales when volunteers from the Royal National Lifeboat Institution responded to a paddleboarder and her dog stranded near the base of a cliff during a fast-moving thunderstorm. The incident occurred near Cemaes on May 27, as severe weather conditions rapidly deteriorated and turned a routine situation into a life-threatening emergency.
Rescue teams reported navigating extremely challenging conditions, including rocky shallow waters, heavy rain, and intense electrical storm activity that disrupted communications. The paddleboarder and her dog were successfully reached and brought to safety, with both found unharmed but suffering from exposure after being caught in the worsening weather.
RNLI volunteer Vince Jones described the operation as one of the most difficult of his 25-year career, noting that the combination of lightning, storm intensity, and poor visibility made the rescue unlike anything he had previously experienced. Officials praised the crew’s swift response and precision handling, crediting their professionalism for ensuring a safe outcome in what was described as “truly biblical” conditions.
