Ukrainian Decoy Drone Explodes Near Bulgarian Gas Pipeline

A drone crossed from Romania into Bulgaria at 8:10 a.m. on Saturday and exploded roughly 100 meters inside Bulgarian territory near a compressor station on the Trans-Balkan gas pipeline. The device landed in a sunflower field and caused no casualties or damage to the infrastructure. Bulgaria’s Defense Ministry said wreckage analysis indicates it was likely a Ukrainian MAYA decoy drone. Officials stressed there is no indication the incident was intentional.

Prime Minister Rumen Radev and the Defense Ministry confirmed the findings and noted that the drone had evaded detection in both Romanian and Bulgarian airspace. The aircraft entered Bulgarian territory without triggering immediate alerts before detonating close to the strategic energy facility. Authorities described the event as an accidental spillover from the ongoing conflict rather than a deliberate attack. No injuries were reported and the pipeline continued operating normally.

The incident has prompted Bulgaria to strengthen surveillance along its border with Romania and to raise the matter at upcoming North Atlantic Council meetings. Officials view the event as a reminder of the risks that unmanned systems from the Russia-Ukraine war can drift into NATO airspace. Enhanced monitoring and improved early-warning coordination are now under review to prevent similar breaches.

While the drone caused no harm, the close proximity to critical energy infrastructure has heightened awareness across the region. Bulgarian authorities continue to examine the wreckage and share information with allies.
