The Israel Defense Forces announced the completion of “Intrinsic Defender,” a five-day joint naval exercise with the United States 5th Fleet conducted across the Mediterranean Sea, Haifa Bay, the coastal area near Nahariya, and the Red Sea. The drill, postponed from its original 2024 schedule, concluded with expanded operational cooperation and reinforced maritime readiness amid growing regional challenges.
The exercise focused on strengthening integrated U.S.–Israel naval capabilities, enhancing coordination in responding to modern maritime threats, and refining shared technological and tactical proficiencies. Training modules covered sabotage prevention, underwater mine detection and neutralization, ship-boarding operations, medical response procedures, and multi-domain situational awareness.
A key component of the exercise involved a U.S. Navy P-8 Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft working alongside an Israeli Saar 5 corvette to conduct joint air–sea surveillance operations. These coordinated drills sharpened both forces’ ability to identify, track, and respond to threats across expansive maritime zones. The collaboration also underscored the operational fusion between American long-range reconnaissance platforms and Israel’s advanced naval surface fleet.
Video released from the drill highlighted practical and high-risk scenarios executed by both navies. Footage shows divers performing mine-neutralization dives, special operations teams conducting precision boarding missions, and vessels carrying out coordinated maneuvers at sea—demonstrating the real-world application of joint doctrine.
The timing of “Intrinsic Defender” is particularly significant given heightened tension in the Red Sea, including Houthi provocations threatening international shipping lanes. For both nations, maintaining joint readiness is essential not only for protecting their own assets but also for ensuring regional maritime stability.
Officials noted that the drill represents another step in the long-standing strategic partnership between Israel and the United States. As global and regional threats evolve, the exercise reinforces the two allies’ shared commitment to interoperability, deterrence, and mutual defense.
