During the New York City mayoral debate, tensions rose as Socialist candidate Zohran Mamdani took aim at President Donald Trump, criticizing his policies and leadership style. But his opponent, Curtis Sliwa, offered a sharp rebuttal—and a warning.

If you try to get tough with Trump, the only people who are going to suffer from that are the people of New York City,” Sliwa cautioned, urging a more pragmatic approach toward the federal government.

While Mamdani framed his criticism as standing up for “New York values,” Sliwa argued that confronting the President could hurt the city’s interests, especially when cooperation with Washington is needed on issues like public safety, infrastructure, and economic recovery.

The exchange highlighted the deep ideological divide between the two candidates—Mamdani’s activist-driven progressivism versus Sliwa’s law-and-order populism—as both sought to define their vision for the city’s future.
