The Italian Navy has successfully demonstrated the advanced capabilities of its F-35B Lightning II fighter jet, as the aircraft executed a vertical landing on the ITS Cavour aircraft carrier. The maneuver highlights the Short Takeoff and Vertical Landing (STOVL) design of the F-35B, allowing it to operate from shorter decks without the need for traditional runways or arresting systems.
Footage of the operation shows the stealth jet descending steadily before touching down vertically on the carrier’s flight deck, underscoring the precision and flexibility required for modern naval aviation. The F-35B’s STOVL capability enables rapid deployment in maritime environments, expanding Italy’s ability to project air power from the sea.
Italy plans to operate up to 30 F-35B variants as part of its naval aviation fleet. The platform reached initial operational capability in August 2024, marking a significant milestone in the modernization of the Italian armed forces. Operating from the ITS Cavour, the aircraft enhances Italy’s capacity to conduct air defense, strike missions, and joint operations with allied forces.
The successful landing also reflects Italy’s growing role within NATO’s Mediterranean posture. As regional security challenges continue to evolve, carrier-based fifth-generation aircraft provide increased deterrence, interoperability, and rapid response options for allied naval forces.
This demonstration reinforces the F-35B’s value as a multipurpose naval fighter and highlights Italy’s commitment to maintaining a technologically advanced and operationally flexible maritime force.
