The vessel had been held for three weeks following a nighttime boarding and inspection conducted by French naval forces, underscoring Paris’s willingness to actively enforce sanctions against Russia’s so-called shadow fleet.

According to French authorities, the tanker was part of a network of vessels used to bypass Western price caps and transport Russian crude outside standard regulatory frameworks. These ships often operate with opaque ownership structures, flags of convenience, and irregular insurance coverage, allowing them to move oil through European waters while attempting to evade sanctions enforcement. Barrot emphasized that such practices would no longer be tolerated, stating that circumventing European sanctions carries a tangible financial and operational cost.

The operation involved coordinated maritime surveillance and an airborne component, with a helicopter deployed to support the boarding team during the nighttime inspection.
