A devastating fire engulfed two homes in Bellmore, Long Island, early Wednesday morning, resulting in one fatality and injuries to three others from smoke inhalation. The blaze erupted at approximately 4:30 a.m. on February 11, 2026, at 116 Chapman Avenue, quickly consuming one residence and spreading to a neighboring property.

Nassau County Fire Marshal Michael Uttaro described the intensity of the fire, noting that flames were already venting from all windows and doors when firefighters arrived. “It was impossible to try to make access to get in there and rescue that victim,” Uttaro said. The rapid spread of the blaze prevented first responders from reaching one resident trapped in the origin home.

A second resident of the affected home managed to escape despite smoke inhalation, and a family of four in the neighboring house also evacuated safely. Both homes were destroyed and partially collapsed, leaving seven residents displaced and neighbors visibly shaken by the tragedy.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire. Residents expressed sorrow for the loss, with one noting that “the sirens and lights woke us up early this morning,” adding, “It’s very deeply sad. I really feel for the family.”

The incident underscores the dangers of fast-spreading residential fires and the heroic efforts of first responders, who confronted extreme conditions to protect lives despite the limitations imposed by the intensity of the blaze.
