President Donald J. Trump warned that the United States will take “very strong action” against Iran if the regime proceeds with the execution of anti-government protesters, underscoring rising tensions as nationwide unrest continues. The pledge came during a Wednesday interview with CBS News, where Trump was asked about reports that Iranian authorities intend to carry out hangings of detained demonstrators.

“We will take very strong action if they do such a thing,” Trump said, adding that he does not want to see continued killings in Iran and that further executions would trigger a decisive U.S. response. When pressed, he referenced recent U.S. military operations and stress-tested deterrence in other theaters, signaling that Tehran should reconsider any plans to hang prisoners. 

The warning reflects growing international concern over Iran’s crackdown on protests that began in late December 2025. According to the U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), the death toll from the unrest has reached at least around 2,500 protesters, with more than 18,000 arrests reported. Rights groups fear that executions could be used to intimidate dissenters and suppress broader civil mobilization.

One protester, 26-year-old **Erfan Soltani**, is reportedly facing imminent execution after a rapid trial and conviction, drawing particular attention from human rights advocates and U.S. officials. Amnesty International and other groups have condemned the use of expedited trials and death sentences as violations of international norms. 

Trump’s remarks also follow broader U.S. efforts to pressure Tehran, including the cancellation of diplomatic meetings and consideration of tariffs on nations that continue to trade with Iran. The administration has urged Iranian protesters to persist and hinted at support “on the way,” though specifics of any U.S. action—diplomatic, economic, or military—remain under discussion. 

Iranian authorities have denied that executions are imminent and describe the unrest as contained, blaming foreign interference and “terrorist operatives” for the violence. Regional and international actors have expressed varied responses, with some cautioning against escalation even as global human rights bodies call for restraint and accountability.
