Dashcam footage captured a terrifying moment last week on Interstate 24 in Davidson County, Tennessee, when a vehicle slammed into a Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper’s squad car during a routine traffic stop. The video shows the trooper standing near the cruiser when a pickup truck, traveling at a high rate of speed, rear-ended the patrol vehicle, violently jolting it forward. Despite the severity of the impact, authorities confirmed the trooper was not seriously injured.

According to officials, the crash occurred while the trooper had activated emergency lights during the stop. The dashcam footage records the sudden collision and the trooper’s startled reaction as the cruiser absorbs the force of the crash. Investigators later determined the striking vehicle was traveling approximately 97 miles per hour in a 70-mile-per-hour zone at the time of impact.

Law enforcement agencies are using the incident to reinforce the importance of Tennessee’s “Move Over” law, which requires drivers to slow down and change lanes when approaching stationary emergency vehicles with flashing lights. Authorities emphasized that this law exists to protect troopers, first responders, and roadside workers who are especially vulnerable during traffic stops.

Officials noted that similar “Move Over” laws are in effect in all 50 states, yet violations remain a leading cause of injuries and deaths among law enforcement officers working along highways. The incident on Interstate 24 serves as a stark reminder that inattention and excessive speed can turn a routine stop into a life-threatening situation in seconds.

State officials are urging drivers to remain alert, reduce speed, and move over whenever they see emergency lights on the roadside, stressing that compliance can mean the difference between life and death for those serving the public.
