In a scene straight out of a video game, a Pinellas County deputy caught a fleeing suspect after hopping into a passing van—where a game of Mario Kart was playing in the backseat.

The incident, captured on bodycam footage released Friday (Aug. 22), began when officers pulled over a car after detecting the smell of marijuana. During the inspection, one passenger tossed a backpack to another man, who bolted down the road.

As the officer gave chase, a passing driver pulled over, flung open the door, and offered a ride. Seizing the chance, the deputy jumped in, riding shotgun as Mario Kart played in the back of the van.

The unusual assist allowed the deputy to overtake the suspect, who was later subdued with a taser and taken into custody.

The sheriff’s office praised the passer-by’s quick thinking, while social media users couldn’t help but joke about the surreal moment, comparing it to a “real-life Mario Kart side quest.”
