Authorities in Atlanta have identified the suspect accused of opening fire outside the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) headquarters and near Emory University. The gunman, 30-year-old Patrick Joseph White of Kennesaw, Georgia, is alleged to have fired multiple shots during the incident, which tragically claimed the life of a law enforcement officer.
The shooting unfolded near the end of Emory University’s summer term, prompting urgent “shelter-in-place” alerts across the campus and surrounding areas. According to police, several bullets struck a CDC building, though no CDC employees were reported injured.
Law enforcement agencies swiftly responded to the scene, and White was taken into custody following the deadly encounter. Investigators have yet to release a motive, but the incident has sparked heightened security concerns in and around the Atlanta area.
The CDC and Emory University have both expressed condolences to the fallen officer’s family and gratitude to first responders who acted quickly to protect the community.
