President Donald Trump delivered a strong warning during an interview with CBS, declaring that if the Supreme Court invalidates his administration’s tariff policies, the U.S. economy would face devastating consequences.

Asked what would happen to his economic plan if the Court struck down the tariffs, Trump responded bluntly: “I think our country would be immeasurably hurt. I think our economy will go to hell... I think it's the most important subject discussed by the Supreme Court in 100 years.”

The President’s comments underscore how central tariffs have become to his broader “America First” economic strategy. Since returning to office, Trump has used targeted tariffs to shield U.S. industries from foreign manipulation, revive domestic manufacturing, and counter economic aggression from countries like China and Mexico. The policy, he argues, levels the playing field for American workers and restores control over national trade sovereignty.

Critics, primarily among Democrats and globalist economists, claim tariffs risk trade retaliation and price increases. But Trump’s allies maintain that his policies have strengthened U.S. industrial output and secured vital supply chains in key sectors — from steel and semiconductors to energy independence.  

The Supreme Court’s upcoming decision on the legality of executive tariff authority has become one of the most consequential legal battles of the decade. A ruling against the administration could severely limit the president’s ability to impose tariffs without congressional approval, effectively dismantling a key pillar of Trump’s economic doctrine.

For Trump, the stakes could not be higher. “This is about America’s survival as an independent economic power,” one senior White House official noted. “The President sees tariffs not as punishment, but as protection — protection for the American worker and for the country’s long-term security.”
