President Donald Trump has forcefully shut down New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani's threat to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, declaring in no uncertain terms that the International Criminal Court's warrant carries zero weight on American soil. Mamdani, who has spent months signaling he might direct city authorities to detain Netanyahu under the ICC's warrant when the Israeli leader visits New York for the United Nations General Assembly in September, was met with a swift and unambiguous rebuke. "Benjamin Netanyahu will not be arrested, in any way, shape, or form, while in the United States of America," Trump wrote, framing the Israeli leader as a wartime ally standing against a regime with American blood on its hands.

Trump's statement went further, directly tying his defense of Netanyahu to Iran's deadly crackdown on its own citizens and decades of hostility toward the United States. He pointed to the deaths of 52,000 protestors inside Iran and accused Tehran's leadership of 47 years of targeting American soldiers and others, arguing that the real criminals belong nowhere near Netanyahu's position. "The only ones that should be arrested are the people that led Iran into this unprecedented SPIRAL OF DEATH AND DESTRUCTION, something that should have been dealt with years ago, by previous Presidents!" Trump added, turning the arrest conversation squarely back onto Tehran's leadership and, notably, past U.S. administrations he suggested let the threat fester.

The clash comes as the Trump administration has ramped up its broader offensive against the ICC, with officials including UN Ambassador Mike Waltz insisting the court has no jurisdiction over the United States or Israel and calling Mamdani's arrest threats "pure political theater." Netanyahu's office has similarly dismissed the ICC warrant as illegitimate, while the prime minister himself has brushed off Mamdani's threats with visible confidence. With no date yet set for a Trump-Netanyahu meeting and September's UN gathering looming, the standoff between the White House and City Hall over Netanyahu's safety on American soil is far from over.
