Marine Corps F/A-18 Hornet Crashes Near Rimrock Lake During Training Mission, Hero Pilot Ejects Safely as Firefighters Quickly Contain Blaze

A U.S. Marine Corps F/A-18C Hornet from the VMFA-323 "Death Rattlers" squadron crashed Saturday in a remote area of the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest near Rimrock Lake in Yakima County, Washington, during a routine training flight. The pilot successfully ejected from the aircraft and walked out to meet responders without sustaining injuries, later receiving precautionary hospital checks. Three other jets in the formation returned safely to base, demonstrating the professionalism and preparedness of our military aviators operating along challenging routes like the VR-1355 low-level training corridor in the Cascades.

First responders, including Naches Fire crews and Forest Service helicopters, acted swiftly to contain the small wildfire sparked by the incident, preventing any evacuations or further damage in the popular recreational area east of Mount Rainier. This efficient coordination between military personnel and civilian emergency teams highlights the strength and readiness of America's first responders and armed forces. The Marine Corps is now conducting a thorough investigation to determine the cause while continuing essential training operations that keep our pilots sharp and our nation secure.

Incidents like this underscore both the inherent risks of military aviation and the exceptional skill of our service members who routinely push the limits to defend American interests. With the pilot safe and the situation rapidly brought under control, this event reaffirms the high standards and resilience of the United States Marine Corps. Strong support for our military remains essential to maintaining the readiness that protects our homeland and projects power globally.
