Authorities in Mississippi ordered widespread evacuations late Wednesday after a powerful explosion rocked the CF Industries nitrogen fertilizer plant in Yazoo City, triggering a dangerous ammonia leak that blanketed the surrounding area in a chemical plume.

Local officials confirmed that the blast occurred shortly before 7:30 p.m. at the massive industrial complex, located roughly 40 miles northwest of Jackson. The explosion ruptured ammonia storage lines, sending a toxic cloud drifting over nearby neighborhoods and prompting emergency crews to establish a two-mile evacuation zone.

Hazmat teams from multiple counties rushed to the scene, working through the night to contain the leak and monitor air quality. Mississippi Emergency Management officials later reported that the situation was “under control,” with the ammonia plume largely neutralized and no injuries reported. Residents were advised to remain indoors until authorities completed safety checks and air tests.

CF Industries, one of the nation’s largest fertilizer producers, released a brief statement confirming the incident and thanking first responders for their swift action. “Our priority is the safety of our employees and the surrounding community,” the company said. “We are cooperating fully with local and state emergency management agencies to ensure the situation remains contained.”

The explosion caused significant structural damage within the plant, with visible flames and heavy smoke rising for hours after the initial blast. Witnesses described a loud boom followed by a wave of heat and a pungent, choking odor. “It felt like an earthquake,” said one Yazoo City resident. “Then we heard sirens everywhere.”

Governor Tate Reeves has been briefed on the situation and praised first responders for their professionalism and quick containment efforts. Environmental officials from the EPA and Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality are expected to conduct a full investigation into the cause of the explosion and potential long-term impacts.

The incident comes amid heightened national concern over industrial safety and supply chain stability, particularly as key U.S. fertilizer plants remain essential for agricultural production. The Yazoo City facility is a critical link in the nation’s fertilizer supply chain, and while no disruptions have yet been reported, experts warn that even temporary shutdowns could ripple through farm economies across the South and Midwest.

As Yazoo City begins recovery efforts, state officials continue to monitor air quality and reassure residents that the risk of further exposure has been mitigated. For now, calm has returned — but the explosion serves as a stark reminder of the constant need for vigilance and strong oversight in America’s industrial heartland.
