Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has firmly rejected the idea of allowing American military forces to operate within Mexico’s borders as part of Washington’s crackdown on powerful drug cartels.
Speaking during a press briefing, Sheinbaum made it clear that Mexico’s sovereignty is non-negotiable, emphasizing that security challenges must be addressed by Mexican authorities—not foreign troops.
Her remarks come amid growing calls from some U.S. lawmakers and officials to take a more aggressive stance against cross-border cartel activity, which has been linked to drug trafficking, organized crime, and rising violence.
While Sheinbaum acknowledged the need for international cooperation in combating cartels, she stressed that such efforts should focus on intelligence sharing, law enforcement collaboration, and economic strategies—not the deployment of foreign military personnel on Mexican soil.
This position reflects long-standing sensitivities in Mexico regarding foreign intervention, rooted in the country’s history and national pride. Analysts suggest the firm stance could shape U.S.-Mexico relations in the coming months, especially as both nations grapple with shared security challenges.
