Marines from the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) conducted close-quarters combat exercises in Puerto Rico, reinforcing U.S. Southern Command’s (SOUTHCOM) mission to combat transnational crime and bolster homeland security across the Caribbean region.
The drills, held this week, focused on urban and confined-space warfare, simulating real-world scenarios where Marines may encounter armed threats during counter-narcotics or security operations. The exercises involved live-fire training, tactical breaching, and room-clearing maneuvers, designed to enhance readiness and precision under high-stress conditions.
According to U.S. defense officials, the training forms part of a broader strategy to support regional partners and disrupt illicit trafficking networks operating in the Caribbean and Latin America. The 22nd MEU’s presence underscores Washington’s commitment to maintaining security and stability in the Western Hemisphere.
“Marines are here to ensure we’re ready for any mission — whether that’s supporting our allies, stopping drug flows, or responding to emergencies at home,” said a U.S. military spokesperson familiar with the exercise.
Operating under SOUTHCOM, the 22nd MEU continues to serve as a forward-deployed force capable of rapid response across multiple domains — from humanitarian assistance to direct interdiction missions.
The exercises in Puerto Rico not only strengthen interagency cooperation but also highlight the strategic importance of the island as a key U.S. defense hub in the Caribbean.
