Rep. Mike Lawler, chairman of the House Middle East and North Africa Subcommittee, declared that the Trump administration’s aggressive pressure campaign against Iran has successfully forced what he described as “the remnants of this regime” into serious negotiations. Speaking during an appearance on CBS’s Face the Nation, the New York Republican argued that President Donald Trump’s hardline approach, combined with strong coordination alongside Israel, dramatically weakened Tehran’s leverage after months of escalating regional tensions and military setbacks.

The remarks come amid Pakistan-mediated negotiations taking place in May 2026 focused on limiting Iran’s nuclear ambitions, reopening the Strait of Hormuz, and discussing potential sanctions relief following devastating U.S.-Israel strikes earlier this year targeting Iranian military infrastructure. Trump allies have pointed to the talks as evidence that maximum pressure and military deterrence remain far more effective than the Obama-Biden era strategy of concessions and delayed enforcement, which critics say empowered Tehran while destabilizing the Middle East.

Supporters of the administration hailed Lawler’s comments as confirmation that the White House has regained control of a rapidly deteriorating geopolitical situation by forcing Iran back to the negotiating table from a position of weakness. Pro-Israel voices also emphasized that the renewed diplomatic push only became possible after decisive action severely damaged Iranian operational capabilities, reinforcing arguments that strength and pressure — not appeasement — are driving the region toward greater security and stability.
