NASA’s Curiosity rover has delivered a breathtaking panoramic view of Mount Sharp on Mars, captured on February 7, 2025, during its climb through sulfate-rich layers in Gale Crater. The mosaic, released in April 2025, highlights distinct geological formations that provide evidence of ancient lakes, shifting climates, and potential organic molecules, offering scientists further insight into the planet’s past habitability.

The panorama, shot from approximately 3.5 miles above the crater floor, utilizes the rover’s Mastcam system to produce true-to-life color images. The rusty red tones seen across the landscape result from pervasive iron oxide dust in Mars’ thin CO2 atmosphere, which scatters sunlight differently than Earth’s atmosphere, producing hazy skies and muted sunsets.
