When asked to identify key issues behind the dysfunction in the city’s public school system, Mamdani spoke broadly about equity and funding, without outlining actionable steps.

“When it comes to our schools, I believe that every single child deserves to have an excellent public education,” Mamdani said. “We have not seen that under the stewardship of those schools with this mayoral administration, we have not seen it because we are not fully funding those schools.”

Mamdani continued his answer by criticizing the lack of a class-size mandate and poor literacy rates — before abruptly pivoting to discuss housing policies and improvements to local parks, drawing confusion among moderators and audience members.

Critics seized on the moment as evidence of Mamdani’s tendency to speak in sweeping generalities rather than concrete proposals. “He keeps circling back to slogans without substance,” one campaign analyst remarked. “This was supposed to be his chance to show voters he understands education policy — and he fumbled it.”
