An arctic outbreak unleashed brutal cold and heavy lake-effect snow across the eastern United States on Tuesday, burying parts of upstate New York and sending temperatures plummeting 15–25 degrees below average.  

The powerful cold wave, fueled by a deep southward plunge in the jet stream, pulled frigid polar air from Canada into the Midwest and Northeast, gripping more than 190 million Americans in record-breaking early-season cold.  

Communities near the Great Lakes — including Buffalo, Rochester, and Watertown — were hit hardest, with near whiteout conditions as strong winds intensified snow squalls. Forecasters say this round of lake-effect snow could add several additional feet in localized areas before tapering midweek.  

The early November freeze shattered daily temperature records from Chicago to New York City, signaling a sharp shift from last week’s mild conditions. Meteorologists warn that the ongoing Arctic pattern could linger through the weekend, with the potential for more snow bands and dangerous wind chills across the Great Lakes and Northeast.  

Officials urged residents to limit travel in hard-hit regions and prepare for possible power outages as the deep freeze continues its grip on much of the country.
