The informal game took place during a series of meetings aimed at coordinating Syria’s post-war reconstruction following the 2024 fall of Bashar al-Assad.  

The footage shows a relaxed atmosphere, with al-Sharaa and U.S. officials passing the ball, giving high-fives, and even attempting a few shots while still dressed in formal attire and military uniforms. Observers noted that the lighthearted interactions offered a stark contrast to the serious nature of the diplomatic and security discussions occurring simultaneously.  

Earlier this week, both the United Nations and the U.S. lifted terror-related sanctions on al-Sharaa to facilitate Syria’s rebuilding process, signaling a shift in international engagement and support.
