U.S. wholesale inflation slowed more than expected in July, offering a positive signal on price pressures. The Producer Price Index was unchanged from the previous month, coming in below the 0.2 percent increase forecast by economists. On an annual basis, the rate eased to 4.7 percent from 5.5 percent, driven largely by a 3.1 percent drop in energy costs and a 0.9 percent decline in food prices. The softer reading suggests that some of the earlier inflationary pressures in the supply chain are continuing to moderate.

At the same time, initial jobless claims rose by 9,000 to 209,000 in the week ending August 9. The increase came in above the 202,000 level that analysts had anticipated and points to a slight softening in the labor market. While the rise remains modest by historical standards, it adds another data point for the Federal Reserve to consider as it weighs the path of interest rates. Together, the inflation and claims figures present a mixed but generally cooler picture of economic conditions.

The combined data may give the Federal Reserve additional time to evaluate price trends before making its next policy decisions. Market participants responded with modest declines in futures and Treasury yields following the releases. For now, the numbers reinforce the view that wholesale price pressures have eased, even as policymakers continue to monitor employment indicators closely. The coming weeks of data will help determine whether this cooling trend holds.
