Taiwan’s military has taken visible steps to strengthen its defensive posture, deploying fuel-filled “explosive barrels” at a strategic river mouth north of Taipei as part of urgent combat-readiness drills. The move comes amid heightened Chinese military activity around the island, underscoring growing cross-strait tensions and Taiwan’s focus on delaying and disrupting any potential invasion attempt.

The deployment took place on December 30 at the mouth of the Tamsui River, a critical geographic chokepoint that could serve as a rapid access route toward the capital in an amphibious assault scenario. Video footage from the exercise shows Taiwanese military engineers using M3 amphibious rigs and small boats to position blue barrels across the river under foggy conditions, simulating wartime obstacles designed to block or slow enemy landings.

Military officials described the barrels as part of a layered defensive strategy. Filled with fuel and positioned to be detonated if necessary, the obstacles are intended to create explosions, fires, and debris that would complicate navigation for hostile forces. While simple in concept, the tactic mirrors historical battlefield measures, including World War II-era oil-drum barriers, which were used to delay advancing troops and buy time for reinforcements to arrive.

The drills were conducted in direct response to China’s ongoing “Justice Mission 2025” exercises, which have featured rocket launches, naval deployments, and increased activity around Taiwan. Recent footage has also documented close encounters between Chinese and Taiwanese coast guard vessels, adding to concerns about escalation and miscalculation.

Defense planners view time as a decisive factor in any conflict scenario. By fortifying river mouths and coastal approaches with low-tech but effective obstacles, Taiwan aims to slow an attacking force long enough to mobilize reserves, reposition units, and coordinate broader defensive operations.

The exercise highlights Taiwan’s emphasis on practical, asymmetric defenses that complement advanced systems. As pressure from Beijing continues to build, Taipei is signaling that it is preparing its terrain — and its forces — to resist any attempt to reach the capital quickly or easily.
