Operations at Heathrow Airport, Europe’s busiest airport, were temporarily disrupted on Sunday afternoon after a spectacular tail strike involving a freight plane.

At 5:13 p.m., a DHL Airbus A300 cargo aircraft landing from Leipzig struck its tail on the northern runway, according to Flightradar24 data, which indicated the plane was traveling at 170 mph at the time of the incident. Remarkably, no injuries were reported.

The strike caused delays for thousands of passengers as airport operations were briefly suspended while authorities assessed the runway and aircraft for safety. Airport officials worked to clear the runway and resume normal traffic as quickly as possible.

While unusual, tail strikes are a known aviation hazard, typically occurring when an aircraft’s nose pitches up excessively during landing or takeoff. Investigators are reviewing the incident to determine the exact cause and to prevent similar disruptions in the future.
