A self-proclaimed supporter of Hamas has been sentenced to more than 19 years in federal prison after carrying out firebomb attacks in California.
Authorities said 35-year-old Casey Goonan admitted to targeting the University of California, Berkeley, and a federal courthouse in Oakland in June of last year. Prosecutors revealed that Goonan hurled Molotov cocktails at the buildings, causing significant property damage and endangering lives.
In January, Goonan pleaded guilty to maliciously damaging or destroying property by fire and explosives. Investigators reported that he was motivated by Hamas’ October 7 terror attacks and claimed his actions were meant to show support for Palestine.
Federal prosecutors described the firebombings as acts of “domestic terrorism,” stressing that such crimes cannot be tolerated. The nearly two-decade sentence reflects the seriousness of the attacks and their potential to harm innocent people.
Officials also noted that while no lives were lost, Goonan’s actions posed an extreme public safety threat. The case stands as a warning against politically or ideologically motivated violence on American soil.
