A massive emergency response unfolded Tuesday afternoon after reports of an active shooter at the Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles in Wilmington, culminating in the death of a Delaware State Trooper and the fatal shooting of the suspect by police.

The incident occurred around 2:15 p.m. at the DMV facility on Hessler Boulevard. Law enforcement officers from multiple agencies rushed to the scene as alarms and public alerts urged residents to avoid the area. Video footage from the scene shows police cruisers, fire trucks, and emergency vehicles flooding a crowded parking lot as officers moved quickly to secure the building.

Initial reports indicated that an officer had been injured and that a suspect was in custody. Authorities later confirmed that the injured officer, a Delaware State Trooper, succumbed to his wounds during the confrontation. Police also confirmed that the gunman was shot and killed at the scene, bringing the immediate threat to an end within approximately 25 minutes of the first calls.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene as officers stormed the building, demonstrating decisive and courageous action under extreme danger. The response is being described as swift and coordinated, aimed at neutralizing the threat and protecting civilians inside and around the facility.

Following the incident, all Delaware DMV locations were shut down statewide as a precautionary measure. Nearby roads were closed, and the area surrounding the Wilmington facility remained an active crime scene as investigators began the process of determining the motive and sequence of events.

Congresswoman Sarah McBride issued a public statement offering prayers for the fallen trooper, his family, and all those affected by the violence. Law enforcement leadership emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing and that additional details will be released once confirmed.

The loss of a state trooper in the line of duty marks a tragic day for Delaware and underscores the risks faced daily by law enforcement officers responding to active threats in public spaces.
