Queensland, Australia — A motorcyclist’s ill-timed show of bravado turned costly after he performed a wheelie at high speed, unaware that a police officer was riding right beside him. The incident occurred during routine patrols on a highway in Tanawha, Queensland, when officers spotted two motorcycles allegedly speeding in convoy.

One of the bikes — a Yamaha YZF-R7 LA — suddenly lifted into a wheelie while traveling at 155 km/h in a 110 km/h zone, prompting officers to quickly intercept the rider. The 22-year-old Carters Ridge man was issued with nine demerit points, AU$3,008 (£1,502) in fines, and had his licence suspended for six months.

Queensland Police shared dashcam and bodycam footage of the incident, which showed the rider performing the stunt just meters from the marked police vehicle. The officer immediately pulled him over, describing the behavior as “reckless and dangerous to both the rider and others on the road.”

Authorities said the case highlights the continued issue of dangerous motorcycle stunts and excessive speeding on Queensland highways. Police have increased patrols and emphasized that such stunts can lead not only to fines and suspensions but also to serious injury or death.

As road safety campaigns intensify ahead of the summer travel season, officials reiterated a clear message to thrill-seekers: “Save it for the track — not the highway.”
