FDA Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary announced a major crackdown on 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH), a powerful compound found in some kratom products, often sold in vape shops and gas stations. Makary warned that 7-OH can be up to 13 times stronger than morphine, making it a serious public health threat.

“It means you can walk down the street in almost any neighborhood in America and buy an opioid,” Makary said, adding that the FDA has initiated the process to classify 7-OH as a Schedule I controlled substance.

The move follows Florida’s emergency ban on the compound, citing rising ER visits and risks to teens and young adults. 7-OH is typically sold in tablets, gummies, and drink mixes, often without regulation, raising concerns about another wave of the opioid crisis.
