NYC Drowns Overnight as Flash Floods Swallow Cars, Strand Drivers on BQE

New York City was hit with dramatic flash flooding after severe thunderstorms swept through the region, dumping two to four inches of rain in a matter of hours and turning city streets into rivers. Footage captured the chaos as deep water submerged cars stuck in traffic, with one person seen navigating the flooded street on a small vehicle while another waded through knee-deep water holding an umbrella under gray, overcast skies. The storms brought life-threatening flash flooding to creeks, streams, and urban roadways across the five boroughs, prompting the National Weather Service to issue flash flood warnings for hard-hit areas including Jamaica, Crown Heights, Forest Hills, Park Slope, and Woodside.

The flooding proved especially severe on major highways, with the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway among the roads overwhelmed by rising water, stranding vehicles and trapping drivers who had nowhere to go. Emergency crews conducted multiple water rescues throughout the evening, including firefighters who drove directly into the flooded roadway in Woodside, Queens, to pull trapped motorists to safety. Subway infrastructure was not spared either, with at least one station entrance in Queens overtaken by floodwater, compounding the transportation nightmare for residents already dealing with a brutal stretch of extreme heat and hazardous wildfire smoke in the days prior.

City officials are urging New Yorkers to avoid driving through flooded roadways, reiterating the well-known warning that most flood-related deaths occur inside vehicles caught in rising water. While the storms brought the added benefit of clearing out the lingering Canadian wildfire smoke that had blanketed the region, the tradeoff was a night of dangerous, fast-moving floodwater that once again exposed the vulnerability of the city's aging drainage infrastructure. As cleanup efforts get underway, the event serves as yet another stark reminder of how quickly severe weather can bring America's largest city to a standstill.
