A fierce fire tore through the roof of an apartment building in the Crotona Park East section of the Bronx, sending thick plumes of smoke into the air on Sunday.
Chopper 2 aerial footage showed flames engulfing the upper section of the building as firefighters worked urgently to contain the blaze. While officials confirmed there were no reports of injuries, several residents are expected to be displaced as a result of the damage.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Emergency crews are assessing the building’s structural integrity to determine whether tenants can safely return. Meanwhile, local organizations are preparing to assist those forced from their homes.
Residents described scenes of chaos as alarms rang out and neighbors rushed to evacuate. “We just grabbed what we could and ran,” one tenant said.
This incident adds to a string of recent residential fires in New York City, highlighting ongoing concerns about building safety and fire prevention in older structures.
