Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed that the process of selecting the next Federal Reserve Chair is underway, with eleven candidates now under consideration. Speaking on the matter, Bessent said he will begin meeting with the contenders after Labor Day to narrow the list before presenting recommendations to President Donald Trump.
“We've announced eleven very strong [Fed Chair] candidates. I'm going to be meeting with them... to start bringing down the list to present to President Trump. It's an incredible group. It's people who are at the Fed now, have been at the Fed, and private sector,” Bessent said.
The decision carries significant weight as current Fed Chair Jerome Powell’s term is set to expire in May 2026. The selection will not only determine the direction of U.S. monetary policy but also signal how the Trump administration plans to approach inflation, interest rates, and financial stability in the years ahead.
Analysts note that the inclusion of candidates from both the Federal Reserve system and the private sector reflects a broad search for leadership at a pivotal time for the U.S. economy.
