Dashcam Captures Three-Vehicle Crash at Rural Iowa Intersection, Three Hurt
Newly released dashcam video from the Fayette County Sheriff's Office shows the moment a pickup truck and a tractor-trailer collided at a rural intersection near Oelwein, Iowa, on the afternoon of Monday, July 27. The footage, captured by a semi that had stopped nearby, shows a Dodge Ram pickup towing a trailer failing to stop at the sign on W Avenue before it was struck broadside by a westbound tractor-trailer traveling on Highway 3. The impact sent both vehicles careening into a Chevrolet Impala that was waiting at a separate stop sign on the intersection's southbound approach, resulting in all three vehicles being totaled.
Three people were taken to the hospital following the crash: the driver of the semi, the driver of the pickup, and a passenger riding in the pickup. Authorities have not released details on the extent of their injuries, and the driver of the Impala was reportedly not harmed despite the vehicle being struck in the chain-reaction collision. The Fayette County Sheriff's Office says the crash remains under active investigation, and as of now no charges have been filed against any of the drivers involved.
The dashcam footage offers a sobering look at the dangers posed by rural intersections, where uncontrolled or poorly marked crossings can turn a routine stop into a life-threatening collision in an instant. Officials have long warned that failure to stop or yield at rural crossroads remains one of the leading causes of serious crashes in farm country, where high speeds and limited visibility leave little room for error. As the investigation continues, the footage is expected to serve as key evidence in determining exactly what led to the pickup entering the intersection without stopping.
