Lt. Col. (Ret.) Dr. Mordechai de Haas, a former UNIFIL peacekeeper and Israeli security analyst, has argued that United Nations forces in southern Lebanon restrict Israel’s operational flexibility and complicate efforts to address security threats along its northern border. Speaking in a recent interview, de Haas stated that, from the perspective of the Israel Defense Forces, the presence of UNIFIL often limits Israel’s freedom of action while providing additional political and operational constraints during periods of heightened tension.
De Haas, who served with UNIFIL in 1980, also weighed in on discussions surrounding proposals for a new international force that could replace the current mission and oversee any future ceasefire arrangements. According to his assessment, simply changing the name or structure of an international deployment would do little to alter the underlying political realities that Israel faces when foreign troops are positioned in sensitive security zones near Hezbollah strongholds.
His comments come as debate continues over the effectiveness of international peacekeeping efforts in southern Lebanon and the challenge of preventing Hezbollah from rebuilding military capabilities near the Israeli border. Supporters of a stronger Israeli security posture argue that any arrangement that limits rapid military action against emerging threats could undermine deterrence, while discussions over future ceasefire monitoring mechanisms remain a key issue in broader regional security negotiations.
