Eastern South Dakota experienced intense weather Sunday afternoon as scattered thunderstorms swept across the region, bringing heavy rainfall, flooding, and dangerous conditions.

According to the National Weather Service, the storms moved southeast across parts of southeastern South Dakota and southwestern Minnesota, producing brief but intense downpours. Some areas saw small hail and strong wind gusts reaching 40 to 50 miles per hour. Frequent lightning strikes added to the hazards, raising the risk of power outages and fire concerns.

The heavy rain led to localized flooding in low-lying areas and on roadways, creating dangerous driving conditions. Authorities urged motorists to avoid flooded streets and reminded the public that it only takes a few inches of water to stall or sweep away a vehicle.

Emergency officials and weather experts stressed the importance of storm safety. “When thunder roars, go indoors,” the National Weather Service advised. Residents are encouraged to remain inside for at least 30 minutes after hearing the last rumble of thunder to reduce the risk of lightning strikes.
