President Trump hailed the January 2026 U.S. jobs report as evidence of the benefits of his administration’s efforts to shrink federal employment, arguing that layoffs in 2025 helped funnel skilled workers into the private sector. The report, released this month, showed the addition of 130,000 nonfarm positions while the unemployment rate held steady at 4.3%.

Speaking publicly, Trump emphasized, “The jobs report's amazing in certain ways because we have tremendously fewer federal employees... by getting rid of them, these people became available to work in the private sector.” He credited the reduction in federal positions with creating opportunities for private employers to hire experienced workers, framing the trend as a validation of his second-term push to streamline government.

The Trump administration has tracked over 350,000 federal separations in 2025, including retirements, resignations, and targeted layoffs, as recorded by the Office of Personnel Management. While Congress temporarily imposed a three-month moratorium on layoffs late last year amid budgetary disputes, the broader initiative to reduce bureaucracy continued, aiming to lower federal spending and improve efficiency.

Economists note that while federal downsizing can release workers into the broader labor market, other factors also influenced January’s employment gains, including seasonal hiring, private-sector investment, and sector-specific growth trends. Nevertheless, the president framed the results as evidence that policy decisions at the federal level can directly impact private-sector labor availability and economic performance.

Trump’s comments reflect his administration’s ongoing narrative that reducing government size not only saves taxpayer dollars but also invigorates the economy by increasing the supply of skilled labor for businesses. Analysts suggest that the report will be used politically to reinforce support for further reductions in federal headcount and continued deregulation in key industries.

The January jobs data, combined with Trump’s emphasis on the connection to federal workforce reductions, provides a clear talking point for administration officials promoting policies designed to balance government efficiency with private-sector growth and employment opportunities.
