Ukraine has significantly expanded the geographic scope of its military operations, carrying out its first-ever drone strike in the Mediterranean Sea, according to Ukrainian and Western officials.

The operation, executed by Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) on December 19, targeted the oil tanker QENDIL, a vessel reportedly linked to Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet”—ships used to transport oil in ways that evade international sanctions. The tanker was reportedly sailing empty at the time of the strike.

According to reporting from Reuters and Politico, the QENDIL sustained critical damage during the attack. Infrared video footage released online shows a drone approaching the vessel, followed by multiple explosions that ignited fires on the deck and caused sustained structural damage.

The strike occurred more than 2,000 kilometers from Ukrainian territory, marking a major demonstration of Ukraine’s long-range drone capabilities and operational reach. Analysts say the attack underscores Kyiv’s growing ability to target Russian logistical and economic assets far beyond the immediate front lines of the war.

Russia’s shadow fleet has become a key component of Moscow’s efforts to continue exporting oil despite Western sanctions imposed following its invasion of Ukraine. These vessels often operate under opaque ownership structures, frequently change flags, and avoid standard tracking systems.

Ukrainian officials have framed the operation as part of a broader strategy to disrupt Russia’s wartime economy and pressure its energy exports, which remain a critical source of revenue for the Kremlin.

The Mediterranean strike represents a notable escalation in Ukraine’s use of unmanned systems and signals that Russian-linked assets may face increased risk well beyond traditionally contested waters as the war continues.
