A 22-year-old hiker was rescued this afternoon in the Angeles National Forest after sending an emergency SOS text through his iPhone.
The man, who became dehydrated, injured, and lost near Mt. Lawlor, managed to send a 911 text that included his exact GPS coordinates. The message was received by the Crescenta Valley Sheriff Station, which quickly coordinated a multi-agency rescue effort.
Deputies dispatched Montrose Search & Rescue, Air Rescue 5, the U.S. Forest Service, and the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Air 5 located the stranded hiker, lowered a medic to assess his condition, and then hoisted him to safety.
Authorities credited the quick activation of the iPhone SOS feature for helping first responders locate and save the man in a timely manner.
