FBI Director Kash Patel announced that, for the first time, Antifa-aligned anarchist extremists are facing federal terrorism charges following a violent July 4, 2025, attack on an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Texas.

The incident took place at the Prairieland ICE center, where two men allegedly coordinated an armed assault using fireworks as diversions while carrying rifles and wearing bulletproof vests. A police officer was injured during the attack before law enforcement subdued the suspects.

The unprecedented charges stem from President Donald Trump’s September 2025 executive order designating Antifa-aligned groups as domestic terrorist organizations. This move allows federal prosecutors to apply “material support for terrorism” statutes—previously reserved for cases involving foreign entities such as ISIS or al-Qaeda—to domestic extremists for the first time.

Patel emphasized that the decision reflects a broader commitment to address politically motivated violence “without bias,” regardless of ideology. Legal experts note the development could set a significant precedent in how the U.S. government handles future cases of homegrown extremism.
