A dramatic near-tragedy unfolded on Highway 17 near Wawa, Ontario, when an Ontario Provincial Police officer narrowly escaped being struck by an out-of-control SUV during a violent lake-effect snowstorm. Dashcam footage from November 26, 2025, shows the officer directing traffic on the ice-covered highway when an SUV suddenly fishtails toward him at high speed. With only seconds to react, the officer leaps out of the way as the vehicle skids past and plunges into a roadside ditch.

The footage captures the brutal reality of northern Ontario winter conditions: black ice hidden beneath fresh snow, blinding gusts, and near-zero visibility created by intense lake-effect squalls rolling off Lake Superior. According to Environment Canada data, these storm systems can deposit up to 30 centimeters of snow within just a few hours, rapidly transforming highways into deadly terrain.

Despite the terrifying nature of the incident, no injuries were reported. The officer, shaken but unharmed, immediately radioed for assistance while ensuring that other drivers slowed down and moved through the area safely. The SUV’s occupants were also uninjured, thanks in part to the deep snowbanks that cushioned the vehicle’s slide off the road.

The close call highlights the severe risks officers face while performing traffic control during winter storms—situations where a single patch of black ice can turn an ordinary stop into a life-threatening encounter. It also serves as a stark reminder to drivers traveling through the Great Lakes region during winter months: even reduced speeds may not be enough on highways where ice, whiteout conditions, and sudden squalls can erase all traction in an instant.

Authorities continue to warn motorists to use extreme caution on northern Ontario highways as winter intensifies. For the officer involved, quick reflexes and a split-second decision made the difference between life and death on a frozen stretch of Highway 17.
