HAWAII — Kīlauea, Hawaii’s most active volcano, erupted once again this week, sending massive lava jets shooting more than 1,000 feet into the air. The dramatic eruption illuminated the night sky over the Big Island and drew attention from scientists, residents, and visitors witnessing the raw power of nature.

The eruption occurred within Kīlauea’s summit caldera, with fountains of molten lava rising high enough to be seen miles away. According to volcanologists, the intense height of these lava plumes often leads to the formation of a rare and beautiful phenomenon known as Pele’s hair — fine, golden strands of volcanic glass that are lighter and thinner than human hair. The U.S. Geological Survey confirmed elevated seismic activity and new fissure openings but emphasized that the eruption remains confined within the volcano’s summit area, posing no immediate threat to nearby communities. Still, officials are monitoring gas emissions and potential ashfall as a precaution.
