HUD Secretary Scott Turner confirmed that President Donald Trump has called an urgent meeting of his top economic advisors in Florida to develop what is being described as the most aggressive housing affordability plan in U.S. history.

Speaking in a Fox News interview, Turner said housing affordability has become a top priority for the administration, with the president personally driving the effort.

“He has been working 24/7,” Turner said. “We will be meeting together in Florida to talk about housing affordability ideas. This is top of mind and top priority for the president.”

According to Turner, the administration is exploring a broad strategy aimed at dramatically increasing housing supply while reducing costs for first-time homebuyers. Key areas under consideration include cutting regulatory red tape, easing zoning restrictions, supporting FHA and Fannie Mae-backed financing options, and examining longer-term mortgage structures—potentially extending up to 50 years—while ensuring market stability.

The push comes amid a severe national housing crisis. Median U.S. home prices reached approximately $412,000 in 2025, according to data from the National Association of Realtors, placing homeownership increasingly out of reach for middle- and working-class families.

Turner emphasized that the administration’s approach will focus on supply-side solutions rather than price controls, arguing that deregulation and construction incentives are essential to restoring affordability. He also linked housing pressures to broader economic factors, including border security and labor market dynamics.

The planned meeting underscores the administration’s intent to make housing affordability a central issue heading into the upcoming midterm elections, signaling a major policy push with significant political and economic implications.
