A Waymo self-driving taxi successfully avoided a potentially major collision on the 10 Freeway in Los Angeles after detecting and reacting to a dangerous crash situation unfolding directly ahead. Dashcam footage shared by Waymo co-CEO Dmitri Dolgov showed an out-of-control vehicle slam into a freeway wall before stopping in the middle of the roadway. The autonomous vehicle approaching the scene then quickly adjusted its path and safely maneuvered around the disabled car without making contact. The incident has drawn significant attention as another high-profile demonstration of autonomous driving technology responding to sudden road hazards in real time.
According to Waymo executives, the crash was reportedly connected to suspected street racing activity on the freeway. Video footage shows the vehicle losing control at high speed before colliding with the barrier and spinning into the traffic lanes ahead of the Waymo taxi. Despite the sudden obstruction, the robotaxi appeared to identify the danger early enough to make controlled defensive driving decisions. Dmitri Dolgov stated that the autonomous system “maneuvered defensively to safely bypass the scene,” emphasizing the vehicle’s ability to rapidly analyze and react to unexpected roadway threats.
