Authorities in Lithuania are responding to a major explosion and fire after a train carrying gas derailed and ignited near Vilnius.

At least eight rail cars caught fire, prompting emergency officials to order evacuations within a one-kilometer radius of the blaze. Thick smoke was seen billowing from the site as firefighters worked to contain the flames.

Police said the train, operated by Polish energy company Orlen, was headed to Baltoji Vokė when the accident occurred. Preliminary findings suggest the cause was a “man-made accident due to a violation of safety regulations.”

No immediate reports of casualties have been released, though authorities warned the situation remains dangerous as crews secure the area. The incident has raised concerns about transportation safety and hazardous material handling along Lithuania’s rail network.
