Tensions in Syria escalated sharply after a senior commander within the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) publicly declared that his forces are prepared to enter Damascus “within hours” if ordered by leadership. The statement, delivered from northeast Syria, signals a potentially dangerous turning point one year after the Assad regime was toppled by HTS-led forces in December 2024.

Verified nighttime footage circulating online shows armed SDF fighters positioned at a fortified outpost, reinforcing the credibility of the warning and underscoring the seriousness of the threat. The declaration comes amid mounting pressure on the SDF ahead of a December 31, 2025 deadline requiring its estimated 50,000 fighters to integrate into the new Syrian national army under Damascus control.

The standoff intensified following deadly clashes in Aleppo on December 22, where fighting between rival factions left at least two civilians dead. Those confrontations raised alarms in Washington and across the region, prompting urgent U.S. mediation aimed at preventing a broader conflict that could destabilize post-Assad Syria even further.

For the SDF, the integration mandate represents a fundamental challenge to its autonomy and command structure, developed over years of joint operations with the United States against ISIS. For Damascus, asserting centralized military control is seen as essential to consolidating power after years of fragmentation and civil war.

The situation places the United States in a delicate position. American officials have worked to de-escalate tensions, balancing support for longtime Kurdish-led partners with the strategic imperative of preventing renewed large-scale violence. Regional actors, including Israel, are closely monitoring developments, aware that renewed conflict in Syria could open additional fronts and embolden hostile Iranian-backed elements.

As the deadline approaches, the SDF commander’s warning highlights how fragile Syria’s post-Assad landscape remains. Whether diplomacy prevails or armed escalation follows will likely shape the country’s future—and regional security—for years to come.
