San Jose Police Department officers responded to an armed carjacking on Capitol Expressway on January 21, 2026, setting off a violent chain of events that culminated in a multi-agency pursuit spanning Santa Clara and San Benito counties. Authorities identified the suspect as 30-year-old Mohamed Husien, who allegedly committed multiple armed carjackings during the incident.

The pursuit began in San José, extended south toward Hollister, and later returned to the city. During the chase, Husien was reportedly involved in two officer-involved shootings with outside law enforcement agencies prior to the final confrontation.

The incident ended near the intersection of Julian Street and Notre Dame Avenue, where Husien shot and seriously injured an SJPD sergeant. Officers at the scene returned fire. Husien was pronounced dead at the scene, while the wounded sergeant was transported to a hospital. Police later confirmed the sergeant’s injuries were non-life-threatening.

Embedded aerial footage and scanner audio capture the final moments of the pursuit, showing the suspect attempting another carjacking before gunfire erupted. The recordings underscore the intensity and danger faced by officers and civilians during the extended chase.

The shooting remains under investigation, with multiple agencies reviewing the circumstances surrounding the use of force, consistent with protocol in officer-involved shootings. Authorities have not released additional details pending completion of those reviews.
