A Thanksgiving cooking safety demonstration turned dramatic when Orange County Fire Rescue firefighters intentionally dropped a frozen turkey into a hot deep fryer, triggering an instant fireball. The controlled demonstration was designed to warn the public about the dangers of deep-frying frozen or partially thawed turkeys, a leading cause of holiday kitchen fires.

The explosion occurs due to basic thermodynamics: ice inside the frozen turkey rapidly melts into water, which superheats and expands up to 1,700 times its volume when converted to steam. The expanding steam violently forces hot oil out of the fryer, where it can ignite and spread quickly.

Fire officials and the National Fire Protection Association urge homeowners to fully thaw turkeys, keep fryers outdoors on stable ground, and maintain safe distances when cooking to prevent injuries and property damage during the holiday season.
