Thousands of European farmers gathered outside the European Union’s headquarters in Brussels in a large-scale protest that brought parts of the city to a standstill and underscored deepening anger toward EU leadership and trade policy.

More than 7,000 farmers from across Europe arrived with tractors, blocking major roads near EU institutions. Demonstrators burned tires, waved national flags, and confronted riot police, who responded with tear gas as clashes broke out around the perimeter of the summit area. Protesters framed the demonstration as a stand against what they described as centralized, ideological governance that threatens national sovereignty and rural livelihoods.

At the center of the unrest is the long-negotiated EU-Mercosur trade agreement, which would reduce tariffs on South American agricultural imports such as beef and soy. Farmers argue the deal would flood European markets with cheaper products produced under lower environmental and labor standards, placing domestic producers at a severe disadvantage.

Discontent among farmers has been building since 2024, fueled by rising costs, strict environmental regulations, and declining profit margins. A 2023 European Commission impact assessment projected income losses of up to 20 percent for certain agricultural sectors under the Mercosur framework, further intensifying opposition.

Many demonstrators accused EU officials of prioritizing global trade ideology over food security and family farming, warning that continued pressure on agriculture could hollow out rural Europe. Chants and banners emphasized solidarity among farmers and called for policies that protect domestic production rather than undermine it.

Despite repeated protests across multiple EU capitals over the past year, farmers say their concerns have been ignored. The Brussels demonstration marks one of the largest and most confrontational yet, signaling that resistance to current EU trade and regulatory policies is far from fading.
