Dozens Rescued as Severe Storms Trigger Flash Flooding in Maryland and DC

Dozens of people were rescued Saturday evening as powerful storms swept through Washington, D.C., and central Maryland, triggering flash flooding and widespread emergency responses.

The National Weather Service issued multiple flash flood warnings for the region, warning residents to avoid low-lying areas and stay off the roads. Torrential rain quickly overwhelmed drainage systems, leading to rapidly rising waters in several neighborhoods.

Montgomery County’s Emergency Communications Center received approximately 100 emergency calls during the height of the storms. Firefighters and rescue personnel conducted numerous water rescues, pulling stranded residents from flooded vehicles and homes.

“This was a very active and dangerous situation,” said Pete Piringer, spokesperson for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue. “Our teams responded swiftly to dozens of rescue calls to prevent further harm.”

The storms also caused road closures, power outages, and damage to infrastructure in parts of the affected area. Officials are urging residents to remain alert, as additional rainfall may continue to pose flooding risks into Sunday.

Authorities are now assessing the damage and encouraging residents to report flooded basements, downed trees, or power outages to local emergency services.
